Men’s basketball will join the slate of intercollegiate athletic programs offered by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in the 2021-22 season.
The inclusion delivers the athletic department to 14 total varsity sports and serves as the seventh scholarship program started in the past five years.
“Men’s basketball adds a new and exciting dynamic to the athletic department and the college by continuing to enhance the overall student and student-athlete experience,” stated Athletic Director Deanna Bradley.
Subsequent to the college’s Aspire Even Higher strategic planning efforts, SMWC is enthused to invite another sport that goes hand-in-hand with its growth plans.
“It is very exciting to be adding yet another athletics team at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Men’s basketball will add another layer of enthusiasm for our students and the entire campus,” said President Dottie L. King, Ph.D.
“I am grateful to be able to strategically bring programs to fruition, both academic and athletic, that fulfill our strategic goals and provide opportunities for new generations of students. This is a positive next step in our evolution as an institution. We continue to Aspire Even Higher,” King added.
SMWC will immediately embark on a regional search for a head coach to lead student-athlete recruitment efforts to complete a roster for the inaugural season.
“Our goal is to hire a coach over the next few months who can immediately start the recruiting process and create a program that will compete at a high level within the first year,” Bradley said.
All interested applicants can review the job description and apply for the position here.
“With this addition, fans can expect to see even more activity in the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center that is expected to provide our on-campus students and community supporters with more opportunities to watch our Pomeroys’ in action,” said Brennan Randolph, vice president for enrollment management and institutional technology.
Similar to other varsity teams, the men’s basketball program will compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the institution’s current affiliation.
The departmental efforts in the 2020-21 season will focus on building the men’s basketball team while the first season of competitive play will begin in 2021-22.
