SMWC to lead Wabashiki cleanup

News | 03.29.2011

The Sustainability Club at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College helps to facilitate sustainability activities into all aspects of the student experience, both inside and outside the classroom. The club invites the community to join in a clean-up effort at the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area along the west bank of the Wabash River between Terre Haute and West Terre Haute. Operation:Wabashiki is scheduled for Sunday, April 3, 2011from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

As a result of initiatives like this, The Princeton Review’s Guide to 286 Green Colleges recognizes Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College for its exemplary commitment to sustainability.

“We are deeply committed to raising environmental awareness. Many endangered species inhabit these wetlands and we feel it is our responsibility as a community to keep it clean,” said Amber Slaughterbeck, environmental science major.

The ten-member club plans to engage the campus, community and sustainability clubs from Indiana State University, Ivy Tech and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on how this small effort makes a big difference. The Indiana Department of Natural resources will assist in removing the litter.

Participants are asked to dress appropriately for volunteer work and bring work gloves. The club can provide a limited number of gloves. Anyone ages 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Coffee supplies will be located at Duey Point and lunch will be provided.
