As the highest award for academic excellence, service and faith, the Saint Mother Theodore Guerin (SMTG) Scholarship at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College goes to exceptional applicants.
One student is awarded up to full tuition and $4,000 toward the cost of a room in Le Fer Hall. Three students receive up to full tuition, and 10 will receive $22,000 in tuition coverage. Last year, approximately 50 students applied. This year, the cohort houses 15 students. The scholarship not only allows students to have financial assistance but also allows them to form a deeper connection to our foundress.
Geneva Clark, an equine science major with a concentration in equine business management and a full tuition scholarship recipient from Orleans, Indiana, shared how much of a relief it was to get such assistance to complete her degree. “When I first learned about the scholarship, I was all in. To be one of the scholarship recipients, it is such a blessing,” Clark said.
Audrey Boyer, an equine science major and full tuition scholarship recipient from Dakota, Illinois, shared how the scholarship continues to make her feel connected to Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. “She was such an incredible woman. Her struggles and abilities to overcome all the challenges she faced has been amazing to learn about and relate to from my own personal struggles,” Boyer explained.
Eligible applicants must be admitted or enrolled as a full-time, campus-based student, planning to enroll in a degree-seeking program. They must also demonstrate unique experience and desire to make a difference in the community and prove academic excellence by holding a 3.2 high school GPA.
Lucy Howard, an elementary education (K-6) major and full tuition scholarship recipient from Covington, Indiana, shared how being selected as a recipient was reassurance that she was supposed to come to The Woods. “When I had first talked to my parents about it, they encouraged me to apply. I told my mom that if it’s God’s will, then it will happen. If I hadn’t received the scholarship, I wouldn’t be here,” she shared.
In addition to being held to a high standard on campus, each cohort member must complete a number of service hours, which is required in the cohort honors class.
Paige Chickadaunce, a human services major from Sullivan, Indiana, received a full tuition scholarship and an additional $4,000 toward room and board. She shared that she is enjoying the class. “I absolutely am loving the class so far. We all have similar core values while still being different from one another. I’m excited to see where we go together from here through bonding and service activities.” Applications for the SMTG scholarship are now open for the 2024-2025 academic school year. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2023.
