Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s Student Activities Committee (SAC) was recently nominated Organization of the Year for the Midwest region at the annual Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) Conference in Chicago, Ill.

SAC’s New Student Orientation program was also nominated Program of the Year for the Midwest region. SAC is now nominated for both categories at the national level, which will be announced at the National APCA Programming Conference, March 18-22, 2015, in Jacksonville, Fla.

“I am particularly proud that the organization has been recognized with regional awards the past two years,” states Jeff Malloy, dean of students and SAC advisor at SMWC. “SAC is clearly a leader in the Midwest and winning one of the four awards, two years in a row, really reinforced it.”

Over 40 schools attended the conference, and the criteria for the Organization of the Year award involved the types of programs SAC hosts, which is usually two major events per month including both entertaining and educational programs.

SAC, which currently has about 15 student members, is responsible for providing the student population at The Woods with entertainment. Members work together, network in the community and prospect for new experiences to provide student populations with outstanding entertainment. SAC also co-sponsors educational programming with the office of campus life.

Through the hard work of SAC, the diversity of the programming and entertainment brought to SMWC has grown significantly in recent years.

“I have been lucky enough to help organize some amazing events. We brought the 90s hit band Fastball to campus, as well as the well known a capella group, Six Appeal. In my time as president, we held formal and casual dances, brought musicians, comedians, hypnotists, and educational speakers, hosted outdoor movie nights, and so much more,” said Marguerite Frazier, 2014 graduate of SMWC, former student president and current co-advisor of SAC.

The Promotion of Campus Activities Conference is designed for student activities boards as a networking opportunity to book campus events. There are guest speakers and workshops for the students to bring tools back to their activities board, and the award ceremony recognizes outstanding boards, students and advisors.
