Tips for the fall semester

Blog | 07.14.2023

Preparing for the fall semester of college is essential to start off on the right foot and set yourself up for success. At Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), students are encouraged to go the extra mile to guarantee proper preparation for a successful academic year. Here are some tips to help you get geared up for the fall semester:

Put a plan in place
Review your course descriptions and class schedule and create a plan that balances your classes, study time and other commitments. Consider your strengths, preferences and any prerequisites or major requirements. Make sure you make time for yourself to relax and allot time for sports practices, workout routines and mealtimes.

Purchase textbooks and supplies
Make a list of the textbooks, notebooks and any other supplies you’ll need for your courses. Check for any recommended readings or online resources and consider renting or buying used textbooks to save money. Don’t forget necessary items like highlighters, sticky notes and index cards.

Get organized
Set up a system to keep track of important dates, such as deadlines for assignments and exam days. This could be a physical planner, a digital calendar or a task management app. Create folders for each class on your computer or in a physical file organizer.

Refresh your knowledge
If you’ve had a break from academic work, consider refreshing your knowledge on key concepts or subjects related to your upcoming courses. Reviewing previous notes or textbooks can help you reacquaint yourself with the material. Reading for leisure can also retrain your brain to get back into study gear after a restful summer.

Reach out to professors
If you have any questions about the course content or materials, don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors before the semester begins. Introducing yourself early can also help build a positive relationship with them. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 13 to 1, SMWC allows students to develop personal connections with faculty and staff.

Connect with classmates
Join online discussion boards or social media groups for your courses or college in general. Connecting with your peers before the semester starts can help you make friends, find study buddies and establish a support system.

Check technology requirements
Ensure your computer, software and internet connection are up to date and functioning properly. Some courses may have specific technology requirements, so review those and make any necessary arrangements.

Set goals and prioritize
Reflect on your academic and personal goals for the semester. Break them down into smaller, actionable steps and prioritize them accordingly. Having a clear sense of purpose will help you stay motivated and focused.

Remember that college can be demanding but also an exciting time of growth, adapting and learning. By preparing in advance and creating good habits, you’ll be well-equipped to handle the challenges and make the most of your Woods experience.
