Unique features of SMWC

Blog | 06.13.2023

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) is known for its history and beautiful 311-acre campus. Within The Woods, though, several exceptional features make SMWC unique! Check out a few individual particulars that can only be found at SMWC!

The Avenue

1. The Avenue
It’s the first view as soon as you pull through the front gates of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The Avenue has become a staple at SMWC. Several have described The Avenue as welcoming, peaceful, reassuring of belonging and more. In alignment with The Avenue’s significance at the College, many alumni reminisce about their Avenue Moment, often referred to as the moment students realize that The Woods is home.

2. Architecture
As Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is a part of the Historic District, it’s only fitting that the architecture on campus is one-of-a-kind, from unique concrete patterns to marble staircases and columns throughout the buildings. Each building on campus is impressive with its features.

3. Mural at Le Bois
Painted by Becky Hochhalter in Fall of 2022, the mural in the courtyard of Les Bois Hall has been a vibrant and perfect photo-op addition to campus. The College was a recipient of a Public Art Grant from the Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC). The mural has a few hidden features within it. Can you find them?

4. Composites
Along the walls of Guerin Hall are generations of Woods alumni dating back to 1900. As a complementary gift to graduates, the College offers students the chance to get their cap and gown photo taken for them to keep. Each picture is placed in a composite frame of all graduates from their class and hung on the wall in Guerin Hall. Does your family include a Woodsie? Guerin Hall might be the perfect place to find their photo!

5. Catholic Roots
At SMWC, we embrace our Catholic roots and heritage. You’ll find several places on campus to pray, spend time in spiritual reflection or simply enjoy the quiet from the Sacred Heart Chapel in Le Fer Hall to the Grotto of our Lady Lourdes located near Hulman Hall. Of course, a prominent place on the campus of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods is the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which is used for campus events like Opening Mass during orientation, Ring Day and Baccalaureate on Commencement Day.
