A comedic spin on a fictional tragedy is the basis for this year’s spring musical at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC). The SMWC Music and Theatre Department presents Dan Goggin’s 1985 musical comedy, “Nunsense,” on Feb. 27 through March 2, 2014, at the Cecilian Auditorium.
“Nunsense” is a musical comedy about the Order of the Little Sisters of Hoboken, once a missionary that ran a leper colony in the south of France. While a group of nuns are out playing a competitive game of bingo with rivals, the Maryknolls, the convent cook Sister Julia (Child-of-God) accidentally poisons fifty-two of the nuns – leaving those who returned from bingo in need to raise money quickly to bury them. With the success of their greeting card company, it seems the surviving nuns have raised enough money to bury each poisoned sister – that is, until the Reverend Mother spends frivolously and they wind up without enough money to inter all of the sisters. In a rush to earn the money wasted, the remaining sisters put on a fundraiser to cover the rest of the funeral costs – and maybe a flat screen T.V.?
“It’s a musical comedy that all types of people can relate to and appreciate,” states Danielle O’Connor ’11, theatre director/productions manager at SMWC. “It may be about Catholic nuns from the East coast, but it’s entertaining for people of various backgrounds. What’s unique about this production is that it is being produced in a Catholic environment, nearly thirty years after it was written. So all that’s happened not only in the world, but also within the microcosm of Catholicism resonates differently in some of the jokes and material. It’s great that younger audiences will be able to connect to another generation through this musical via the pop culture references and musical styling.”
